Why we built this

An engineer who watched the system from the patient side.

Somani is an engineer by training. Ten years at Amazon and Oracle building large-scale systems, then HBS.

She started TurnipCare during a high-risk pregnancy, while navigating her infant's breathing issues — moving between specialists, on the phone with schedulers, hanging in voicemail queues, watching the system try and try to keep up.

The doctors were doing their best. The nurses were going above and beyond. Even the people on the phones were trying. But it can't be someone's job to sit and stare at a phone all day, waiting for it to ring. The work in the back office was the constraint — not the care itself.

So she did what engineers do: she went and worked the job before automating it. Two years inside healthcare organizations. Spreadsheets. Provider preferences. Forcing herself to think algorithmically about a process every clinic does differently. Then she built the product.

That's the wedge. TurnipCare is the operating layer that does the parts that shouldn't have been a person's job in the first place.

The founder

Built by an operator who's done the work.

Somani started TurnipCare after spending two years inside healthcare organizations — doing the work by hand to understand how patients actually move through care.

Somani Patnaik

Engineer by training, operator by practice. Bachelor's and master's in EECS from MIT, then a decade leading software and ML teams at Amazon Alexa and Oracle, then HBS. Spent two years working inside healthcare organizations — scheduling appointments, fielding texts, learning every provider's preferences — to understand how patients actually move through care before writing a line of the production product.

Mission

An operating layer for healthcare administration.

Patients shouldn't fall through the cracks because the operational work between primary care and the specialist is broken. We're building toward the day every provider has a personal assistant that handles the work that shouldn't have been a person's job — referral, prior auth, scheduling, follow-up, intake.
